Jawi

Telling Asian Stories

Jawi

Jawi is an Arabic alphabet for writing Malay and several other languages in Southeast Asia. It used to be the standard script for the Malay language but has since been replaced by Latin alphabet. At 76, Sulaiman Awang is still trying to perfect and develop his Jawi calligraphy skills. Sulaiman’s skills are much sought after. His elegant cursive Jawi calligraphy can be seen on all Malaysian ringgit notes.
